About Kantha History
Kantha embroidery, originating in West Bengal, is a traditional craft where old fabrics are repurposed through intricate running stitches. Historically, rural women created Kantha pieces like quilts and shawls, often embedding motifs of nature, mythology, and daily life that carried personal and cultural stories.
A deeply emotional aspect of Kantha was its role in familial bonds. Mothers often stitched nakshi kanthas for their daughters as gifts for weddings or special occasions, infusing the pieces with blessings, love, and memories, making each one a treasured heirloom. The hallmark of Kantha is its simple yet elegant running stitch, used to craft floral, geometric, and narrative designs while layering fabrics for both decoration and function.
